The Church House (aka. Strong's Hall)

We had a new spiral staircase put into the Church House last week. It took 6 men to bring it in to set it up. It just barely fit through the double doors! S2 built a landing up top that leads into the 3rd bedroom. Before this, the 3rd bedroom could only be accessed by walking through the 2nd bedroom which of course was a hassle and an inconvenience to everybody. So now each bedroom has its own staircase!
The church house, as we call it, is our rental. It was built in 1869 as Humboldt's first indoor skating rink. Built by Samuel Strong, a local pioneer, it was aptly named, "Strong's Hall." I have diligently tried to find out more history about the building with little success. The most I found was an advertisement for some sort of Ball in the late 1800's. I have found one photo taken somewhere in the vicinity of 1950 which shows a steeple on top with a bell and a parsonage attached to the south side (which is no longer there). Somewhere in the 1970's the place was taken out of church use and became a private residence. It was remodeled into a three bedroom, 2 bath home with a 1200 sq. ft. great room with 16' ceilings! We bought in for our boys to live in and since then it has pretty much been a bachelor pad. The great room is so big that the boys have played raquetball, wiffle ball, skateboarded, showed movies on the wall with a projector, as well as having concerts, bible studies, and Christmas parties. (and of course only God knows what else!) We even had the rehearsal dinner for S1's wedding party in there.
We had to do a tremendous amount of remodeling and refurbishing before it could even become useful. Sometimes it looks nice and clean while other times I just try not to look too closely! With S2 moving out soon to get married, this will be the first time we have not had a family member living there. I hope it works out!
